WINE
Hungarian wine has a history dating back to at least Roman times. Hungary's wine regions deliver a remarkable range of wine styles for a relatively small country, especially if we face that there are 22 wine regions throughout the country. Wine tourism is very popular with many wineries offering tours and accommodation, as well. Every year numerous wine festivals are held in each region where visitors have the chance to taste different wines from the regions well-known wineries. |
Tokaj is the most famous region, producing the “Tokaji Aszú”, Hungary’s most popular and well-known wine. The “wine of the kings” is a dessert wine matured for three years in special barrels and is sold all over the world in many quality restaurants. The various qualities of Aszu are graded from 3 to 6 “puttonyos”, the higher the grading the more expensive the price. The grapes are individually picked as late as mid-November into buckets (puttonyos) and crushed to a paste. Aszú conditions only happen in perhaps three vintages per decade.

Pálinka is a traditional type of strong brandy that is produced from fruits. It is usually made from plums, apricots, pears and cherries. Pálinka is also known for its exceptional purity, which results in a clean, complex aroma and smooth, warm flavour. Much like Cognac and Champagne, the EU has imposed strict laws concerning what can and can't be called "pálinka" to protect the name and help guarantee quality. According to the official legal definition, only fruits grown in Hungary and distilled without sugar or any form of flavour enhancer can be labeled "pálinka".
