Public Transport System - "BKK"
Budapest has an extensive and efficient public transport system made up of more than 180 bus, 14 trolleybus, 29 tram and 3 metro lines. It is easy to get around the city by public transport, you can find a way to get to almost everywhere you want. Eye-catching yellow trams are good for traveling around the Great Boulevard (No. 4/6) or along the embankment (No. 2) while most areas of tourist interest are easily reachable by the underground.
The three Metro lines interconnect at “Deák tér” station and service frequencies range from 15 minutes late in the evening to every two minutes at peak times. It is highly recommended to try the millennium underground which is the oldest underground on the continent and has been running all the way under the impressive Andrassy Avenue since 1896.
BKV is the company operating public transport system and they offer several unique means of transportation, as well, such as the cogwheel railway, the children’s railway or the chairlift up to the Buda Hills and also the Funicular which is a special way to reach the Castle District area.Danube cruiser boat service is also available.
In general the buses, trams and undergrounds operate between 4:30 am and 11 pm. Outside the daily working hours there are 30 night buses serve all the districts and important areas in the city. Tickets may be purchased at metro stations, ticket machines and at newsagents. Tickets have to be purchased beforehand and validate at the start of the journey. The single tickets are valid for one single journey of any length but if you travel a few times during the day you are advised to purchase a discount coupon book of 10 tickets or a daily pass. European Union citizens over the age of 65 years can travel free of charge on “BKV” services with a few exceptions like the funicular or the chair lift. They just need to provide a proof of age and nationality when requested.
